Creating a Terms and Conditions (T&C) document for a driving school is essential for protecting both the instructor and the student. It sets clear expectations regarding money, cancellations, and legal responsibilities.

Below is a generic template tailored for a UK-based small driving school.

Terms and Conditions

1. Driving Licenses and Health

  • License: The student must hold a valid UK provisional driving license (or a full license for refresher courses) and must produce it on or before their first lesson.

  • Eyesight: The student must be able to read a standard UK number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (with glasses or contact lenses if necessary).

  • Fitness to Drive: The student must ensure they are fit to drive. Lessons will be cancelled without refund if the instructor suspects the student is under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any medication that affects driving ability.

2. Lesson Bookings and Cancellations

  • The 48-Hour Rule: Students must provide at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a lesson.

  • Late Cancellations: Failure to provide 48 hours’ notice will result in the student being charged the full price of the lesson.

  • Instructor Cancellations: The instructor reserves the right to cancel lessons due to mechanical breakdown, extreme weather, or illness. In these cases, the lesson will be rescheduled at no extra cost.

3. Payments and Refunds

  • Advance Payment: All lessons (including block bookings) must be paid for in advance or at the start of the lesson.

  • Block Bookings: Block bookings are non-refundable unless the instructor is unable to provide the service. Unused hours expire after 6 months from the date of purchase.

  • Price Changes: The school reserves the right to change lesson prices, but will provide at least 14 days’ notice to existing students.

4. The Practical Driving Test

  • Test Bookings: Students must consult their instructor before booking a practical test. The instructor reserves the right to withhold the use of the tuition vehicle if they believe the student has not reached a safe, test-ready standard.

  • Vehicle Failure: While every effort is made to maintain the car, the school is not responsible for test cancellations due to mechanical failure during a test.

5. Liability

  • Insurance: The tuition vehicle is fully insured for driving tuition and the practical driving test.

  • Fines: The student is liable for any motoring fines (e.g., speeding, red light cameras, bus lane fines) incurred while they are driving the vehicle.

6. Personal Data

  • Personal details will be held securely and used only for the purpose of driving tuition and booking tests, in accordance with UK GDPR.
